Neighborhood

The Piaggia del Murello is one of the most evocative corners of Arezzo’s historic center. Its uphill layout, flanked by ancient buildings and stone paving, still conveys the medieval atmosphere of the city today. Walking along this street, one can clearly perceive the historical stratification that characterizes Arezzo, where every corner tells a fragment of urban life from centuries past.

At the top of the climb stands the statue of Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany, a neoclassical work by Stefano Ricci. The ruler is depicted in a Roman toga, with a scepter and an oak crown—symbols of civic virtue and moral strength. At the base is a relief celebrating the union between the Valdichiana and the Arno, a testament to the central role of Arezzo and its territory. Next to it stands the Church of San Sebastiano, rebuilt in the 18th century and now deconsecrated, which adds to the artistic and historical value of this part of the city.

The surrounding area preserves an urban fabric rich in cultural significance: noble palaces, narrow alleys, and panoramic views that reveal the interplay between architecture, history, and daily life. Walking along the Piaggia del Murello is not just a physical route but a true journey through the centuries, where the Renaissance and medieval charm of Arezzo is revealed with discretion and authenticity.
